In 2013, Unicamp acquired Fazenda Argentina, an area of 1.4 million m2, adjacent to the campus of the University, in the Barão Geraldo District, Campinas. In its origin, HIDS was conceived as a structure to be created in the Argentine Farm and integrated in a harmonious way to the campuses of Unicamp, combining and articulating actions, through partnerships and cooperation between institutions that have competencies and interests aimed at providing concrete contributions to sustainable development in its most comprehensive form. These national and international institutions include public and private institutions, academia, research institutes, companies and non-governmental organizations. More specifically, this structure was designed to be headquartered in a place where synergies are identified and potentialized, and is thus referred to as Hub.

With the evolution of the activity prospecting activities that could be developed in HIDS, the synergy and the opportunity of this initiative became evident with the vocation of the various players that make up the Ciatec II region – the High Technology Pole located in an area of 8.8 million square meters – in which part of Unicamp is located. The Ciatec II region is identified as the Strategic Development Pole of the city of Campinas. Thus, taking into account (i) the opportunities and challenges related to the Sustainable Development Objectives, (ii) the recognition of the area adjacent to Unicamp / Ciatec II as a Strategic Development Pole and (iii) the vocations of the actors already present in this area (expanded by the presence of the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas – PUC-Campinas), prospecting of HIDS advanced, with universities as attracting and radiating centres of knowledge to promote, with Campinas and region, the creation of a sustainable district (an international reference of smartcity) with impact local and regional director. Therefore, HIDS can understand the entire area that contains the region of Ciatec II, PUC-Campinas and Unicamp. [1] To identify the HIDS activities, their diverse urban scenarios and their values associated with sustainable development, we are interacting with several actors – those present and not present in the planning area, including the Unicamp community, PUC-Campinas, the National Research Center for Energy and Materials (CNPEM [2]), the Technology Polis [3] the Data Processing Center Santander, other institutions of Ciatec II, the owners of the surrounding areas, the prefecture of Campinas and other cities in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, the government of the State of São Paulo, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of São Paulo , among others. [1] Currently, the Argentine Farm and the Technological Park of the State University of Campinas, Unicamp, are already part of Ciatec II. With the inclusion of all Unicamp and PUC-Campinas, the target area of planning goes to 11.3 million m2. The CNPEM is linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC) and has four laboratories including the National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) and Sirius. The Technology Pólis is part of the Paulista System of Technology Parks (SPTec) of the Development Secretariat of the State of São Paulo.
